My name is Jennifer DeSarro, and I'm a Registered Nurse (RN) and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and bilingual in Spanish and English.
Since I know it can be difficult to ask for help, or to trust that the person you're asking is who you need, or will be able to help, I'm going to share a little about myself with you.
I always knew I wanted be a psychotherapist, while at the same time wanting very badly to become a nurse and work in the medical field.
Now as a clinical social worker (psychotherapist), I utilize my experience in medicine to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection, in order to help my clients receive the very best outcomes in their counseling. I understand what a diagnosis from your private physician means, I understand the effects of medications that may be prescribed for you, and I understand that physical DIS-ease may sometimes cause emotional/mental DIS-ease, and that the reverse is also true, that emotional/mental stress can cause our physical bodies to breakdown.
I've been a nurse both at the bedside and in administration since 1980. I was always able to empathize with my patients while at the bedside and connect with my employees as an administrator. I seemed to then, as well as now, have an intrinsic ability to be a skilled, compassionate and intuitive practitioner.
While working as a nurse, sometimes I could sit and listen/talk to my patients. I often heard from them, "Thank you, I feel so much better", and it was then that I began to realize the power of talk therapy. In fact, I sometimes wondered that what they needed was someone to really listen and really understand.
And when it was time for my patients to be discharged, I met with them and their family, assessed the home environment, and made recommendations as to what would be needed in order to continue their recuperation at home, just like today's Medical Social Workers. I made appointments for follow up care with their physicians, connected them with community services and resources all designed to enhance their recovery, just as the role of a Case Manager is today.
Please reach out via the contact page if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Well, if you've asked this question, you're probably in the right place (as one of my most important beliefs is that there are no accidents in life because everything happens for a reason). People come to counseling for many reasons; career issues, sadness, anxiety, family problems, alcohol and/or substance abuse, marital difficulties, financial concerns, legal issues, relationship concerns, workplace problems. Then again, if you're curious or wondering, come on in and try it on and see where it can take you.
At this time insurance is no longer accepted.
The usual Individual session is 45-50 minutes. The usual Couples session is 90-100 minutes as is the usual Family session.
Fees for therapy vary depending on type and length of sessions.
A sliding scale is available upon an emailed request. Please don't let the price of therapy guide you in your decision to seek help.
I practice all types of therapy without confining a session to only one type. I prefer a more eclectic approach based on what the moment requires, and having said that, I am comfortable with cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, behavioral therapy, Gestalt therapy and many, many more etc.
Yes!
By appointment only. Saturday and evening appointments available also. My office is located a short distance east of I-95, just a few miles south of the Aventura Mall, and my street intersects with US1, also known as Biscayne Boulevard. Exit I-95 at the Ives Dairy Road exit and head East on Ives Dairy Road approximately 2 miles where on the far right hand side of the road, there is a "fly over" which will take you right onto Biscayne Boulevard heading south. Continue on approximately another 2-3 miles until you reach NE 191 Street. At that traffic light, make a left turn where you will be heading east one block til you reach the end of the street and bear left into the parking lot of Concorde Centre II. (There is a low, white, concrete sign with the name Concord Center as you enter the parking lot.)
